Adobe® Air, short for Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), is a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) to the desktop.
Air Linux will be released on 2008.
Adobe has traditionally been strong on Windows and the Mac and turned a relatively deaf ear to Linux. That could change, however, with Adobe AIR, a cross-platform runtime for delivering Rich Internet Applications to the desktop, set to move beyond its Windows and Mac OS X roots to Linux.
Adobe Air has attracted much industry attention because it can be used for applications that run on personal computers when not connected to the Internet so Adobe Systems hopes to expand its influence beyond Web site design and into the development of rich Internet applications.
AIR for Android will also allow developers to bring rich, standalone apps to Android-based devices, and Ubuntu Unleashed figured out that you can install AIR using the WINE windows emulation layer for Linux.
Installation isn't exactly painless, and when all is said and done, there are a bunch of AIR applications that won't run. But some will.
